What’s going well, and what isn’t going so well?

That's how almost every session with me starts. Not "what's wrong with you," but "what's going well, and what isn't going so well."

I ask it that way on purpose. When life gets heavy, we get in the habit of only counting what's broken. But you're more than your hardest week. Naming what's still working isn't fluff, it's information, and it's usually where we find the first real foothold.

Whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, burnout, a health condition that changed everything, or a life transition that snuck up on you, we'll look at the whole picture together. Both halves. That's where we start.

Chances are, our first conversation will start with a question like…

"What brings you here?" Not a form, not a diagnosis on a screen. A conversation.

I'm Joy Goldenberg, a licensed marriage and family therapist. I work with adults and young adults across Florida, California, and Utah by telehealth, and in person here in Florida. My approach is collaborative and practical: we'll use tools from CBT, DBT, solution-focused, and narrative therapies, and we'll keep what actually works for your life. My job isn't to hand you a manual. It's to help you live your life, not just survive it.

Questions people ask before their first session

Q: Do I need to be in crisis to start therapy? No. Plenty of people come to me not because something collapsed, but because something's been quietly off for a while. If it's on your mind, that's reason enough.

Q: What actually happens in a first session? We talk. I'll ask what brings you in, what you've tried, and what "better" would look like for you. You'll leave with a sense of the plan, not a pop quiz.

Q: What's the difference between therapy and coaching? Therapy tends to the deeper stuff: anxiety, depression, relationships, the patterns that keep tripping you up. Coaching is more about the road ahead: goals, decisions, the next chapter. We can figure out together which one fits.

You don’t have to white-knuckle this part.

Reaching out is the hardest step, and you've already thought about it. That counts for something. Fill out the contact form and I'll get in touch so we can set up your consultation, no pressure. I'll be straight with you about what happens next: there's some paperwork to complete once you decide to move forward. But that comes after we've talked, and we'll take it one step at a time.
